Anime Summer & Fall 2018

This is a copy-paste of a forum post I wrote on Knowhere.Cafe which you can click here to view.

Another season, another 3 months of my life wasted on weebshit…
Oh well that doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon as I am looking forward to next season already!

I figured I would just give a write-up of what I thought was good this season, what others thought was good (reply if I missed something), and also what I predict will be good next season!.

And before you ask no I will not be giving star or x/10 ratings. I don’t do that for at least a few weeks after finishing a series.

These are all my personal opinions. If you disagree please leave a reply.

Also check my Kitsu for more of my questionable opinions.

Summer Season Retrospective

I Liked

First off are the things that I watched personally all the way through and liked enough to mention them here.

Hataraku Saibou (Cells at Work)

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: David Productions

David Productions is most famous for the excessively popular JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series. And so it’s actually rather surprising that they would have a series run directly before the upcoming JoJo’s Part 5
This show is… Odd. Basically mix those educational biology videos you probably watched in middle school, with anime, and toss in some JoJo’s level hype. I mean technically it’s about the human body, focusing on the circulatory system, but it never really feels like that is what it is about.

Boku no Hero Academia Season 3

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: Bones

The best shounen post-Naruto (and pre if you ask me) is back again! Once more we see the adventures of Deku and UA class 1-A on their path to becoming pro heroes.
If you aren’t already watching this series, you are missing out.
If you are, then get hype for season 4.

Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: Kinema Citrus

This was the stealth hit of the season as there always is. A show that is very reminiscent of Ikuhara’s works this is a wonderful trip of visual symbolism and not so subtle yuri-undertones. Coupled with some beautiful animation I personally think this is the anime of the season.

I Heard Was Good

The rest of these are shows that I did not watch personally, but that I’ve heard good things about but didn’t get around to it.

Steins;Gate 0

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: White Fox

The dark timeline of the venerable original Steins;Gate. While supposedly not quite as good as the original it is still widely liked and is supposed to be worth watching.

Banana Fish

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: MAPPA

I watched the first few episodes of this and was pleased by the gritty feel of the modern American street-gang premise. Will likely pick it back up soon. It is continuing onto it’s second cour next season so this ride isn’t over.

Asobi Asobase

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: Lerche

This show is literally just about 3 girls playing weird random games they made up. That’s really it. But it has the same level of absurdist humor that shows like Nichijou have so seems like a fun ride.

Hanebado!

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: LIDEN FILMS

Oh no a sports anime. Unless you count Chihayafuru I don’t really watch these. But this looks like one of the most fluidly animated and compelling series of late so it is probably worth the watch.

Fall Season Preview

The upcoming fall season looks overall to be pretty decent. Neither amazing nor awful. So I am tentatively excited as usual. Below are the shows that have interested me personally, as you can look at any chart, such as the /r/anime survey to see what the community is excited for.

Probably Gonna be Good

Goblin Slayer

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: White Fox

Yagate Kimi ni Naru

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: TROYCA

It’s a proper, no undertones, no “incest” (looks at Citrus), no funny business, yuri show. Thank the yuri gods, praise be unto them. But seriously this seems like a serious and possibly touching love story.

JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure: Part 5: Golden Wind

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: David Productions

It’s JoJo’s. It’s the 5th part. We’re gonna see weirdly dressed Italian teenagers do some crazy shit. It’s gonna be great.

Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: P.A. Works

Honestly this series only made it above the “toss-up” line because it’s by P.A. Works who I have always enjoyed. Other than that a modern semi-fantasy seems like it could be interesting. Hopefully it has a bit more plot than Flying Witch

Toss-Ups

Now the following series are what I call the seasons “toss-ups” in that there is basically a 50/50 shot of them being either amazing or terrible. Only time will tell.

Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: CloverWorks

Oh no a long-name light novel adaptation. These rarely go well. However the premise for this series seems to be interesting so we might get something surprising.

SSSS.Gridman

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: Trigger

Ok its a mecha-ish. By Trigger. I can hope to god this ends better than Darling in the Franxx (though supposedly the ending is A1-Studios’ fault). If it does than this could be amazing.

Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken

MAL | Kitsu
Studio: 8-Bit

This one flew under my radar at first. I totally expected another shitty isekai harem, blah blah, you know the drill. I was so wrong. The MC is genuinely interesting, the art is stunning, the story (I read the Wiki) is actually interesting, and the OP MC actually is well explained. I look forward to more of this, the first episode is already out.

Anyway that’s my rant. Thanks for reading, leave an upvote if you liked it yada-yada.
Also comment away about what you disagree with, what you thought was good or think will be good, or whatever else.
